To help me think more about the mechanics of joins, methods of joining were investigated.
Different joints and hinges, their construction and range of movement were considered. I found it useful to categorise joins as either mechanical, chemical or thermal and think of them as permanent, (cannot be reversed without causing damage to the materials or product), semi-permanent (designed to be permanent, but can be disassembled without damage to materials) or temporary, such as screws, nuts and bolts etc.
